Effective Strategies for Handling Stress at Work

Workplace stress is a widespread issue that can impact both mental and physical health, as well as job performance. Evidence shows that a combination of individual and organizational strategies is most effective for managing work-related stress.

Proven Individual Strategies

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Techniques: Approaches such as cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, and problem-solving are consistently effective in reducing stress, anxiety, and burnout. Mindfulness-based interventions, in particular, show moderate to strong benefits for stress reduction and improved well-being (Catapano et al., 2024; Catapano et al., 2023; Klink et al., 2001; Clough et al., 2017; Tamminga et al., 2023; Wamea & Nompo, 2024; Zhang et al., 2024; Bhui et al., 2016).
  • Relaxation and Physical Activity: Techniques like yoga, meditation, muscle relaxation, and aerobic exercise help lower physiological stress responses and promote calmness. Yoga and muscle relaxation are among the most effective mind-body practices (Restrepo & Lemos, 2021; Amiri, 2024; Zhang et al., 2024; Bischoff et al., 2019; Bhui et al., 2016).
  • Social Support: Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or family acts as a buffer against stress and improves coping ability (Wamea & Nompo, 2024; Bhui et al., 2016).
  • Healthy Lifestyle and Self-Care: Maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and engaging in leisure activities contribute to resilience and stress management (Chandrasekaran et al., 2025; Bhui et al., 2016).

Organizational and Environmental Approaches

  • Workload and Role Management: Clear job roles, realistic expectations, and participative decision-making reduce stressors. Flexible scheduling and recognition also help (Amiri, 2024; Klein et al., 2019; Živković & Veljković, 2025).
  • Supportive Leadership and Communication: Effective management, open communication, and supportive workplace culture are crucial for reducing stress and promoting well-being (Klein et al., 2019; Živković & Veljković, 2025; Bhui et al., 2016).
  • Access to Resources: Providing counseling, stress management training, and opportunities for professional development enhances employees’ ability to cope (Amiri, 2024; Klein et al., 2019; Anchors et al., 2024).
